The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Kellogg Environmental Center in partnership with the Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society is sponsoring a Bluebird Nest Box Workshop on Saturday, February 25, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Families and individuals will have the opportunity to build their own bluebird nest box to take home with them. The event also features information on the natural history and behavior of the bird, how to locate acceptable areas to post a nest box and how to monitor for threats to the birds and the nesting site. It is important to understand how to monitor and care for your nest box to insure bluebird nesting and fledging of young.

Following the presentation, families may work together to build their own box to take home with them. Wood pieces and nails are provided. Participants are encouraged to supply their own hammer if possible. Due to limited supplies, we will allocate materials to construct one box per family. Plans will be provided if you wish to make additional boxes on your own. Registration is required if you are interested in building a bluebird nest box.

Members of the Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society will be on hand to help with the workshop and answer questions. The program is offered free of charge at the Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Avenue, Derby, CT. Donations are gratefully accepted. Children ages 8 and older are welcome, but need to be accompanied by an adult. Registration is necessary to insure supplies for the program and box building activity. For further information, directions and to register please phone the center at (203) 734-2513.
