The Department of Consumer protection is alerting Connecticut consumers to a recall by Gourmet Boutique, L.L.C., a Jamaica, N.Y., firm, of approximately 286,320 pounds of fresh and frozen meat and poultry products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall on Saturday May 3rd. State food inspectors are now conducting recall effectiveness checks in stores that are known to have carried these products. Thus far, Shaw’s and Big Y stores have confirmed that they sold some of the salads prior to the recall. Although Target stores normally carry Archer Farms products, the recalled items were not provided to Target stores in Connecticut.
We are out in the stores making sure these items have been removed from sale, but since any of these products could already be in consumers’ refrigerators and freezers, it’s important that people review the list carefully,” Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. said. “Consumers should return these products to the store for a refund. I also encourage food service establishments to check their inventories for these potentially hazardous items, and return them to their supplier.”

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, older adults and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.
