WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) announced today that 18 youth drug prevention programs across Connecticut will receive more than $2.07 million in Drug Free Communities Support Program grants from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Fourteen programs in Connecticut will receive continuing funding to support and expand their ongoing prevention efforts and an additional four programs will receive grant funding for the first time.

“The Drug Free Communities Support program helps to ensure that Connecticut’s youth have access to the support that they need to stay away from drugs and alcohol,” said Dodd. “These funds will help communities across the state reduce drug and alcohol abuse through education and outreach initiatives that improve our communities and ensure a brighter future for Connecticut’s youth.”

The Drug-Free Communities Support Program, directed by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, in partnership with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, provides grants to community coalitions that facilitate citizen participation in local drug prevention efforts, which include prescription drug diversion and prevention initiatives and underage drinking programs. The grants support coalitions of youth, parents, media, law enforcement, school officials, faith-based organizations, fraternal organizations, state, local, and tribal government agencies, healthcare professionals, and other community representatives.
