Hartford, CT - The bipartisan Connecticut League of Conservation Voters recently recognized State Representative Livvy Floren (R-149) for her efforts at preserving the environment with a perfect 100% score for votes supporting green initiatives in Connecticut.

“Connecticut’s natural resources are an important part of our state and I’m honored to be recognized for my work in protecting those resources while also providing cleaner water and more open space to our residents,” Rep. Floren said. “Sometimes it’s a tough balance but I believe with smart planning and good legislation we can achieve both.”

Among the environment-related bills supported by Floren this year were several to protected local watersheds, including An Act Concerning the Sale or Abandonment of Water Supply Sources and Associated Land (HB 5334) which requires land currently designated as a water source to retain any connected protective easement or other land protections after a sale.

She also supported An Act Concerning the Coastal Management Act and Shoreline Flood and Erosion Control Structures (SB 376) which modifies the Coastal Management Act (CMA) to consider private property owners' rights when developing, preserving, or using coastal resources and also considers the potential impact of a rise in sea level when planning coastal development.

That act also expands the list of land uses that can be protected by structural solutions to include cemeteries and burial grounds and inhabited structures built by January 1, 1995, requires a municipal zoning commission to approve a coastal site plan for shoreline flood and erosion control. It also requires a municipal zoning commission or the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) commissioner to propose structure alternatives or mitigation measures and techniques if they deny a shoreline flood and erosion control structure application for certain reasons.

Rep. Floren, who was given the Conservation Leadership Award in 2004 and placed on the Conservation Voters Honor Roll in 2006, said she remains committed to doing what’s right for the environment while also working diligently to help small business and create jobs in the state.

The scorecard grades lawmakers on their votes on up to 20 different bills related to the environment. Other bills scored include those on safe disposal of pharmaceuticals, reducing phosphorous in water and open space planning among others.
