The birds are to be showcased by Wind Over Wings, a Clinton-CT-based nonprofit devoted to wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education. Hope Douglas, the founder/president of Wind Over Wings (www.windoverwings.org) and a cancer survivor herself, said the recovery of the raptors is a heartwarming account that serves as an inspiration for cancer patients, their families, clinicians and caregivers. The golden eagle, a red-tailed hawk and an Eastern screech owl are appearing at Jennings Beach in a presentation titled “Soaring for Hope.” Donations are welcome. CancerCare of Connecticut’s 3 ½-mile walk was inaugurated last year and raised $8,732 to support the work of the nonprofit resource for cancer patients and their families. The day is part of series sponsored by Novartis Oncology in Connecticut and New Jersey. Norwalk-based IMS Health is also a Connecticut sponsor. Walkers need a minimum of $25 in pledges to participate. They receive a Walk for Hope T-shirt. There is no minimum for children 12 years old or younger. The series of walks extends to the Mercer/Middlesex area Sept. 25, followed Sept. 28 by similar outings in the New Jersey communities of Bergen/Passaic, Monmouth/Ocean, Essex/Morris/Union, Sussex and a Walk for Mom Oct. 11 in Nomahegan Park in Cranford, NJ. CancerCare of Connecticut, based in Norwalk, provides no-cost professional-level services for those whose lives have been affected by cancer--counseling, group support, education and financial aid.
