“This is a tremendous gift. The generosity of the Foundation helped us exceed our $100,000 fundraising goal – and there is still nearly one month left in the campaign,” Governor Rell said. “I was confident from the start that Connecticut’s citizens and business community understood the importance of this initiative and would give from the heart. They did not disappoint.” The Connecticut Credit Union Foundation is a subsidiary of the Credit Union League of Connecticut. The 146 credit unions in Connecticut represent $7.5 billion in assets and serve more than 870,000 members. In addition to the Foundation’s $50,000 gift, individual credit unions also raised $7,000 for the Care & Share drive. “Credit unions, traditionally touted as ‘people helping people’ understand the challenges that families are facing and will continue to face during these increasing difficult times,” said Dr. Anthony L. Emerson, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Credit Union League of Connecticut. “The Governor’s Care & Share Challenge gives us a great opportunity to exemplify this and lead by example.” Governor Rell launched the campaign July 29 by dedicating $25,000 in state funds apiece to the Connecticut Food Bank and Food Share, the two largest anti-hunger programs in the state. She reached out to Connecticut businesses and citizens challenging them to match her $50,000 by September 26. The campaign has now raised more than $130,000. “With the soaring costs of gas and groceries, it became very clear early this year that more families than ever were struggling to meet their basic needs,” Governor Rell said. “Food pantries saw a dramatic rise in the number of people seeking help.” Contributions can be made through on-line contribution site at www.ct.gov/governorrell that allows users to make “virtual” food purchases. In addition, grocery stores are asking patrons to add $1 to their orders to contribute to the drive. Donations can also be made by mail. Checks for the Care & Share Challenge should be made payable to CT Food Bank or Foodshare and mailed to: · Care & Share, PO Box 120065, East Haven, CT 06512. The Governor said the goal is to raise cash, rather than food donations, because the food banks can use the money more efficiently to obtain and distribute food donated in bulk. Connecticut Food Bank and Foodshare estimate that a $5 donation can feed five adults for a day and a $10 donation can serve two seniors for five days. “Connecticut citizens and businesses did not hesitate to help their neighbors in need and the credits unions are a wonderful example of that,” Governor Rell said. “We are grateful for everyone’s help.
