Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced she has declared Friday, September 19, “POW/MIA Recognition Day” in the state to honor the men and women of the Armed Forces who have endured as prisoners of war and the hundreds of military personnel who remain missing in action from various conflicts – and their families. Since the mid-1980s, Presidents have annually proclaimed the third Friday of September “National POW/MIA Recognition Day.” Connecticut also marks “American Ex-POW Day” every April 9 with a ceremony at the Capitol. The national POW/MIA flag – a black-and-white banner bearing the silhouette of a man, barbed wire, chains and a watchtower and the legend “You Are Not Forgotten” – will fly over the state Capitol on Friday. The POW/MIA flag flies every day at the nearby William A. O’Neill State Armory. “Everyone who has ever worn the uniform of our nation’s military deserves our respect and heart-felt appreciation,” Governor Rell said. “Some of these brave men and women, however, have served their nation under especially trying circumstances: in the lonely and often brutal conditions of prisoners of war. Far from home, uncertain about their fate, knowing their families must be worried, and sometimes in tremendous personal pain, POWs have paid a terrible price for the freedoms we enjoy. “Others – many of whom have likely given their country what President Lincoln called ‘the last full measure of devotion’ – remain missing even decades after the battles in which they fought have ended,” the Governor said. “Their absence is made all the more painful by the agonizing questions and doubts that linger among their family and friends. Our efforts to fully learn the fate of every MIA must never end. “In honor of these patriots and in kinship with their families, I am asking all Connecticut residents to join me on Friday in showing our regard for their valor.” © Copyright by StamfordPlus.com.
