While attending the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington D.C., Hartford Mayor Pedro E. Segarra shared ideas and remarks with the New Democrat Coalition (NDC), a caucus that provides moderate, pro-growth Members of Congress with the opportunity to advance policy proposals that promote economic growth and technology development, preserve national security, and encourage personal responsibility.
"I want to thank Congressmen Murphy and Himes for this special invitation to participate in this frank, necessary and essential conversation between Mayors and House members who truly understand that collaboration and cooperation are essential in moving our country forward," said Mayor Segarra.
The Mayor focused his comments on the urban areas being regional job centers; school construction efforts and the correlation between increased achievement and graduation rates; incentives for Mayors who are fiscally responsible with taxpayer dollars; and cities that often end up being sole-source providers for the re-entry, homeless and mental health populations.
Other items discussed include housing foreclosures; summer youth employment; direct federal funding to cities and towns rather than to the states; and infrastructure investments.
Mayor Michael Nutter, Philadelphia (VP of U.S. Conference of Mayors), Mayor John Dickert, Racine, WI, Mayor William Euille, Alexandria, VA, and Mayor Barbara Lawrence, Southfield, KS also participated in the discussion.
