The U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded an additional $9.3 million in funding to Connecticut communities working to reverse the effects of foreclosure. The grants announced recently represent a third round of funding through HUD’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP).
The announcement was made in Bridgeport at the home of a family assisted through the NSP. Mayor Pedro E. Segarra attended the news conference hosted by Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch, Congressman Jim Himes, HUD New England Regional Administrator Richard Walega, and Commissioner Joan McDonald, of the State Department of Economic and Community Development.
The awardees are as follows:
State of Connecticut: $5,000,000
Bridgeport: $1,215,150
New Haven: $1,041,579
Waterbury: $1,036,101
Hartford: $1,029,926
“Hartford has not experienced the housing crisis to the same degree as our sister cities here in Connecticut, but we all share the same challenges. The Capital City will utilize this new infusion of funds to focus on homeownership opportunities and target the areas where our investment will have the greatest impact. The NSP is essential in our efforts to stabilize our neighborhoods and improve the quality of life for our residents,” said Mayor Segarra.
Under NSP 1, Hartford received and fully committed $2.7 million. With that money, 24 new homeowners and four rental units were created. Two blighted and abandoned eyesores that were deemed structurally unsound were also demolished.
