The Health and Human Services Department announced Wednesday five local agencies selected to receive $5,000 as part of President Obama’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative (TPPI). The agencies are: Community Renewal Team; Restoring Lives Community Development Corporation; Hartford Gay and Lesbian Health Collective; Central Area Health Education Council and; Lawson Chapel Church of Jesus Christ. The selection process included submission of a proposal by January 3, 2013.
The “mini-grants” are part of the $4.5 million received by the City of Hartford in 2010 to establish a community-wide approach to reduce the rate of teenage pregnancies, STI’s and HIV. The grant, awarded to 9 cities across the country, is structured to roll out over 5 years but is not automatically renewable. Each city must submit annual performance measures in order to receive continued funding. The goal of the President’s program is to reduce teenage pregnancy and teen births by 10% by 2015.
The mini-grants will be used to help subsidize new or existing programs involving parents, youth, clergy and LGBT communities throughout the City. Proposals include education sessions in Spanish and English; a social media campaign; a youth-targeted health fair and; workshops for Clergy. All activities will be implemented March through September 2013.
