COVENTRY, CT - Patriotic children sold back more than 55 lbs of their Halloween sweets to Jenkins Dental in Coventry to benefit U.S. soldiers overseas. Dr. Damon Jenkins, DMD, MPH, a former Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, hosted a Halloween Candy Buy Back program from November 1st- 3rd for Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that sends care packages to deployed troops and their families. Instead of sending the candy to the troops, Dr. Jenkins donated 200 dental care goodie bags.

“Part of my duties was to examine each soldier’s mouth before and after they were deployed,” explains Dr. Jenkins. “Their oral health definitely declined when they were out in the field and I want to do anything I can to keep them healthy.”

The Trick-or-Treaters earned $2 per pound of candy, plus received free oral hygiene products. Dr. Jenkins partnered with Henry Schein, a worldwide distributor of medical and dental supplies, to donate dental aids such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and more to the troops.

“We were so impressed with the number of children who wanted to show their gratitude for the brave men and women who protect our country,” said Dr. Jenkins. “When the kids came to drop off their candy, they wrote wonderful letters of appreciation to be included in the packages.”
