HARTFORD, CT - State Senator Carlo Leone (D-Stamford) has been appointed by Senate President Pro Tempore Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) to serve as Senate Chairman of the General Assembly's Banks Committee, and also to fill the leadership role of Assistant Majority Leader.
The new committee chairmanship is in addition to Senator Leone's ongoing responsibilities as Co-Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee.
Senator Leone said, "I am excited to be taking up leadership of the Banks Committee alongside my fellow Stamford legislator, Rep. William Tong. Banking and finance are important industries in lower Fairfield County, and by working together, I believe we serve the whole community by striking an appropriate balance between the needs of these companies and the interests of consumers. I would like to thank Sen. Williams and Majority Leader Looney for providing me with this opportunity, and for entrusting me with the post of Assistant Majority Leader."
Senator Leone's other legislative appointments include membership on the Finance, Revenue & Bonding Committee and on the Transportation Committee.
January 9th marked the first day of the General Assembly's 2013 Regular Legislative Session, which runs through June 5th. Senator Leone's committee appointments will continue through the rest of the current legislative term, till the end of 2014.
Senator Leone added, "There is a great deal of work to be done in the legislature this year, including economic development, creation of new jobs, and response to Superstorm Sandy. Of course, we must also address the issue of gun control in the wake of the Newtown tragedy. Hopefully we will be able to come together in a bipartisan way to address these issues. Even though Democrats and Republicans may disagree on some points, I think there is an opportunity this year to cooperate on meaningful legislation."
