MLK Education & Career Expo to be presented in Stamford

The Multicultural Chamber of Commerce – Stamford, Domus and the East Side Partnership are hosting a MLK Education & Career Expo on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Domus located at 83 Lockwood Avenue in Stamford between the hours of 11am and 4pm.

The day’s events will begin at 11am with a Town Hall Meeting on the Achievement Gap focused on how to provide resources for families to allow them to become the solution to reduce and eliminate the achievement gap. Invited guests and resources for the Town Hall Meeting include: Connecticut state legislators, Campaign Learn, Connecticut Black Alliance, Parent Leadership Training Institute – Stamford Chapter, CTE, Stamford Achieves, Stamford Public Schools and City of Stamford Representatives.

Between the hours of 1pm and 3pm education and career resources will provide one-on-one coaching sessions with youth and young adults. Featured information and services provided will include: scholarships, financial aid, college application review, private schools, career information, resume review and U.S. Census practice test. Key invited resources for this segment of the day are: Stamford Police & Fire departments, Black Greek Letter organizations, 100 Black Men of Stamford, Reach Prep, U.S. Census, and the Hispanic Political Action Pac, local business owners; including dentists, doctors and attorneys.

The culminating events will begin at 3pm with the presentation of the 4th Annual Stamford ICON Award to S. Beatrice Foreman for her lifelong dedication to the service in the Stamford area. Mrs. Foreman is the first black woman to service on the Stamford Board of Education and was the president of the organization during her years of service. Mrs. Foreman taught in the Stamford Public Schools and served in many capacities in organizations that include: League of Women Voters, New Neighborhoods, Person-to-Person Scholarship Committee, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, NAACP, Yerwood Center, CTE, and America Red Cross.

All families with students in the Stamford Public Schools system are invited and encouraged to attend. Childcare will be
provided by licensed childcare professional. Healthy foods will be supplied to all attendees at no cost. Additionally, all
youth and young adult that participate in the education and career segment will receive a back pack and a chance to will
raffle items provided by local merchants.

The major objective of the MLK Education & Career Expo is to provide resources to the underserved community that will
improve the educational experience and career options for youth, young adults and families.
