“March Madness” is here again…but it’s “March Sadness” for problem gamblers

The NCAA Basketball Tournament is the major sports gambling time of the year due to the number of games and the length of the tournament. Despite the illegality of sports betting in all but one state and the NCAA’s anti-gambling stance for college sports, legal and illegal wagering on the games is estimated in the billions of dollars.

Throughout the 16 days of tournament play, employers may lose untold dollars from lost productivity because for many dedicated basketball fans and gamblers, work will become secondary to placing bets and keeping track of the winning and losing teams. For problem gamblers, work is often just another place for gambling all year round.
