Hartford, CT - Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill on Wednesday was elected Treasurer of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), a top leadership position within the national organization that places her in line to be named President of NASS in 2016. Secretary Merrill was named to the national leadership position of Treasurer of NASS during the organization’s annual summer conference, taking place in Baltimore this year. She was chosen for the position by newly named NASS President and Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown. Secretary Merrill had served previously as chair of the NASS voter participation committee, and led a national panel on emergency preparedness for elections with Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler, who was also named today Vice President of NASS, next in line for President. Leadership of NASS – a bipartisan organization among all 50 Secretaries of State – alternates annually between Democratic and Republican members.

“I am so honored to be named as Treasurer of NASS, and I am excited to work under the leadership of my friend Kate Brown to advance a national agenda of better elections, more voting, stronger civic education, and improved services to the business community and the public,” said Secretary Merrill. “I look forward to working with all my colleagues across the country to help give more citizens a voice in government and streamline and improve the way government works with business. I can’t wait to get started!”
