There are many ways to join the fight against multiple sclerosis and one of those is sipping cocktails in the company of good friends.

The Paradise Bar & Grille at 78 Southfield Ave. in Stamford, Conn., Benefit Hope and the Greenwich Jaycees will host Mixing It Up For MS from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 22.

The guest bartending event raises funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter through its Benefit Hope committee.

For three hours, volunteers from Benefit Hope and the Greenwich Jaycees will stand in as bartenders and all tips left during their shift will be donated directly to the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter.

Benefit Hope is a young professional committee of the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter that was founded in 2005 by Carrie Levitt as a non-profit organization raising money for MS.

Since Feb. 2008, Benefit Hope has been a committee of the National MS Society and is made up of professional men and women throughout Fairfield County. The group plans MS fundraisers throughout the year including the MS Taste of Hope, Fairfield County, which will take place on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Aitoro in Norwalk.

More than 6,000 Connecticut residents live with multiple sclerosis, a potentially debilitating disease affecting the central nervous system. The cause is unknown and, as a result, there currently is no cure. Symptoms can include, among other things, numbness and tingling in the limbs, difficulties with vision and speech, stiffness and, in some severe cases, total paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot be predicted.

Funds raised through chapter events ensure ongoing scientific research to find a cure and provide for the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter to those in Connecticut affected by MS.
