Norwalk, CT - To commemorate and celebrate the vital role of women in American history, the Norwalk Public Library invites you to view the photography exhibit: “Norwalk Women Through the Centuries.” This exhibit may be viewed during March, Women’s History Month, in the Main entry foyer display case, located at 1 Belden Avenue, Norwalk.

Photographs from the Norwalk History Room, and part of the library’s permanent collection, are represented in this exhibit. The Norwalk History Room, at NPL, combines the library’s former Local History Collection with the archival collections of the former Norwalk Museum. This large array of published and unpublished books, papers, photographs and maps, among other material, records over three hundred years of Norwalk history.

“Norwalk Women Through the Centuries” includes photos of women dating back to the American Revolution, with many well-known Norwalk names – Belden, Lockwood, Mathews, Betts, Treadwell and more – represented. Recent additions to the collection donated by the Norwalk Hour – photos of Beatrice (Bea) C. Brown ( 1925 - 2008), advocate for city poor and minority residents, and Jennie Bodwell Cave (1902-2001), only woman Mayor of Norwalk, 1975-77 – are but two examples of 20th Century Norwalk women, whose photos are included in this exhibit.

Do you have old photos of people and places in Norwalk? We would love to add them to our collection in the Norwalk History Room at the Norwalk Public Library.
