On February 14, 2013, the Domestic Violence Crisis Center and The Center for Sexual Assault Crisis Counseling and Education will join with activists around the world to rally, dance and ring bells in support of ONE BILLION RISING, the global movement to end violence against women and girls. Numerous local churches will ring their bells at 1 P.M. to help mark the occasion. DVCC has also provided a website, www.onebillionrisingct.org, where supporters can find information and join online.
As the sole provider of domestic violence services in Stamford, Norwalk, Westport, Darien, New Canaan, Wilton and Weston, DVCC is proud to be part of this global movement. Each year the agency directly assists more than 3,500 victims of domestic violence, women who have been physically abused, emotionally degraded and, often, financially stripped of means to support themselves and their children.
“No one who has witnessed the horrific toll that intimate partner violence takes on women and children can ignore this global call for an end to violence,” said DVCC Executive Director Rachelle Kucera Mehra. “Through providing the One Billion Rising Connecticut website, fostering community support and hosting events in Stamford and Norwalk, the DVCC hopes to bring greater awareness than ever before that violence impacts, not only individuals, but families, businesses, our legal system, our healthcare systems. Moreover, left unchecked, it will continue to do so for generations to come.”
ONE BILLION RISING is a call to action based on the staggering statistic from the United Nations that one in three women on the planet will be beaten or raped in her lifetime. With the world population at seven billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls. At the helm of this campaign is Eve Ensler, the award-winning playwright, activist, creator of The Vagina Monologues and founder of V-Day, a global movement which promotes creative events to increase awareness about gender-based violence and to raise money for anti-violence organizations. The OBR campaign, which began in February 2011, encourages women throughout the world and those who love them to come together on February 14, 2013 to ”rise, dance, act” in defiance of the injustices women suffer and to demand an end to violence against women and girls.
Since its launch nine months ago, ONE BILLION RISING has gained huge momentum, attracting thousands of supporters across more than 190 countries and gaining the support of politicians, artists, writers, celebrities, thinkers, activists, non-profits, unions and corporations around the world.
On February 14 at 12:30 p.m. the DVCC will rise at two locations: Latham Park in Stamford, where we will be joined by The Center, and The Green in Norwalk. We invite everyone to join in our rally, dance and ring bells in support of ending violence against women and girls. At 1 p.m. churches, including the Unitarian Universalist Society in Stamford, the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, St. Paul’s On the Green in Norwalk, the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan and nearly every church in Darien, will ring their bells in support of One Billion Rising.
