Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that this Friday, August 27 marks Power IT Down Day, an annual nationwide event that encourages the public and private sectors to turn off their IT equipment at the end of the workday to save energy.

“Whether at home or at the office, it is the little things that really add up,” Governor Rell said. “The simple act of remembering to shut off your computer at the end of the day can have a tremendous impact on energy usage. This is a one day initiative, but doing this every day will help to make conservation a lifelong habit. It is one of many small things each of us can do that can contribute to massive energy reductions over the long run.”

The governor said that for each person who participates in the event, an average of 13 kilowatt hours of electricity will be saved for each night the equipment is turned off. (Using a 60 watt light bulb for 200 hours consumes 12 kilowatt hours of electricity.)

Participants can sign up for the event at www.powerITdown.org .

Power IT Down Day representatives will not share the names of participants, but will be able to track how many people from a specific e-mail domain registered and will report the numbers using that information. The event is sponsored by Citrix, Intel, HP and GTSI, which are working together to spread the word on benefits of energy-efficient initiatives.

“Thousands of kilowatt hours can be saved in a single night by shutting down equipment at the end of a work day,” Governor Rell said. “The result is reduced energy costs and reduced stress on the energy grid.”

The governor noted that estimates of power saved this year could triple last year’s savings because the Power IT Down Day falls on a Friday.

Connecticut state government agencies already power down each day as part of the energy conservation practices promoted and mandated by the Governor in 2008. Each state agency has an energy conservation plan. More than 110 state government computer servers have been decommissioned over the past 18 months, resulting in annual savings of $607,200 including hardware and energy savings. Last year, two statewide contracts were awarded to promote use of greener technology. This green technology in Connecticut includes computer servers that use 14 percent less power.
