May 13, 2008 - 2:02:21 AM
The Westport Arts Center and the Westport Public Library are inviting parents and their children to a public screening of “Juno,” the 2008 Academy Award-winning film for Best Original Screenplay, followed by a conversation with Robert Selverstone, Ph.D., on Thursday, May 29, 6 to 9 p.m., in the Library’s McManus Room.
For 40 years Dr. Selverstone has been on the forefront of health and sex education. He will lead the audience in a talk about how the filmmakers of “Juno” present their perspective of a very relevant teen issue.
Jaina Lewis, Westport Public Library teen service librarian, and Sandy Lefkowitz, Westport Youth Film Festival (WYFF) coordinator, will introduce Dr. Selverstone. Ms. Lewis and Ms. Lefkowitz are collaborating in the development of programs that will engage people of all ages interested in film.
“Film is a terrific vehicle to help the generations connect their often diverse perspectives on issues that are significant and can impact society,” said Ms. Lefkowitz. “Teen sex and pregnancy is a major issue on the parent agenda, as well as for teens, and this screening with an expert provides a neutral environment with which each can listen to the concerns of the other.”
The event is open to the public. Pizza and soft drinks will be served.
WYFF sponsors are Cablevision, Maurer Family Foundation, Tiffany & Co., Paul Newman Foundation, 95.9 Fox, Steaz, Simon Pearce, Bowtie Cinema, Gotham Sound & Communications, Inc., Broadcast Film Critics Association.
