As the weather gets warmer and people head outdoors, the City of Stamford is looking to boost recycling at Stamford town beaches, parks and ball fields.
In February, letters were sent to school PTOs, Little League organizers and recreation services representatives to inform them of the availability of new single-stream recycling toters at these locations, so that they will pass the word along to respective teams, camp organizers and others who are expected to use City facilities this season. The toters have already begun to be placed in and around Stamford’s 56 parks and fields, replacing more than 90% of the garbage cans with recycling bins.
Launched last July, the City’s “One Bin, All In” campaign is making recycling easier for residents, thereby increasing recycling overall. In addition to newspapers, magazines, cardboard, plastic containers and bottles and cans, the list of recyclable materials now includes all waste items except those contaminated by food waste. All items can go into one bin, with no separating required – and this is now available at Stamford town beaches, parks and ball fields.
“Recycling isn’t just something we can do at home. People who are walking at Cove Island or playing softball at Scalzi, can all do their part to help the environment and boost our recycling efforts,” said Dan Colleluori, Stamford’s supervisor of solid waste and recycling. “Diverting goods into the recycling toters saves the City money, plus the recycling brings in some revenue as well.”
