Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will bring his passionate call for environmental stewardship to Norwalk on Thurs., Oct. 18 in kicking off an exciting new lecture series at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.
Kennedy is chief prosecuting attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper and president of Waterkeeper Alliance. His talk opens the Aquarium’s new “Global Insights” series, which will carry the South Norwalk attraction to its 25th anniversary next summer and feature a number of other notable presenters, including celebrated zookeeper Jack Hanna and ocean defender Jean-Michel Cousteau.
“We’re very excited to welcome Bobby Kennedy, whose experiences and passion will deeply touch, anger, frustrate and inspire everyone who hears him,” said Jennifer Herring, president of The Maritime Aquarium. “This will be special, and even more appropriate that he’ll be here on the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act.”
Kennedy’s talk is an invitation-only appreciation event for donors who have given $1,000 or more to The Maritime Aquarium in the past year. There’s still time to contribute to the Aquarium and thereby receive an invitation to the Kennedy event. Call Sam Ross, the Aquarium’s director of development, at (203) 852-0700, ext. 2204.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is an attorney specializing in environmental law. Time Magazine named him a “Hero for the Planet” for his co-founding the Riverkeeper organization and helping it to lead its fight to restore the Hudson River. The group's achievements have helped to spawn more than 130 Waterkeeper organizations across the globe, including the Long Island Soundkeeper. Kennedy also is a clinical professor and supervising attorney at Pace University School of Law’s Environmental Litigation Clinic, and co-hosts “Ring of Fire” on Air America Radio.
Kennedy is no stranger to The Maritime Aquarium. He held a sell-out audience rapt during a 1998 lecture (presented without notes), and was seen on the giant screen in the 2008 IMAX movie “Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk.”
He, of course, is a son of the late U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy.
Also planned in The Maritime Aquarium’s “Global Insights” lecture series are:
Arctic explorers John Huston and Toby Thorleifsson on Thurs., Nov. 29.
marine scientist Dr. Sylvia Earle on Thurs., Jan 24.
zookeeper Jack Hanna for two shows on Thurs., March 14.
and ocean explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau on Mon., May 20.
Those lectures are open to the public, not just to Aquarium donors. However, tickets for those talks will go on sale first to Aquarium members.
“There are many benefits to supporting The Maritime Aquarium through giving and through membership,” said Ross, the development director. “And these benefits include exclusive invitations to events like Mr. Kennedy’s lecture and the first chance to buy tickets – tickets that are discounted, I might add – for other great events.”
