NEW HAVEN, CT - The generosity of employees from The Southern Connecticut Gas Company (SCG) and Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG) – both UIL Holdings Corporation operating companies, will help brighten the spirits of needy children this holiday season.

SCG’s employees pooled their resources to collect several box loads of gifts during a toy drive at the company’s Orange and Bridgeport work locations. The company’s Employee Volunteer Council planned and coordinated the toy drive. The toys were then donated to the Cardinal Shehan Center in Bridgeport and New Haven Family Alliance for distribution to needy children at their respective holiday events. The council serves as a sounding board through which the company’s employees can participate in addressing the concerns of the local community. Over the past decade, the SCG Volunteer Council has channeled support for a broad range of social service, citizenship and philanthropic endeavors.

Employees from the Greenwich office of CNG have adorned a special construct with warm mittens, hats, scarves and gloves for donation to needy families in the community. The construct is known affectionately by the CNG staff as a “mitten tree.” It is built from parts that represent the gas company’s various operating departments. The star, painted gold, is a regulator used by the gas fitters. The body, painted green, consists of spare gas pipes used by the company’s distribution department. The base, painted red, is a furnace blower wheel (often referred to as squirrel cage) used by the company’s customer service department.

CNG employees adorn the tree with their donated items throughout the holiday season. Contents of the tree were donated to the Greenwich Social Services Department on Thursday, December 15, for distribution to needy families.

This year, CNG’s Greenwich employees also teamed up with employees from Mr. Beez Cleaning Service to make an additional donation of 62 toys and 19 articles of gently used clothing to Greenwich Social Services.
