STAMFORD, CT - The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) has announced the award of a grant to the City of Stamford for the purchase of a replacement refuse collection vehicle, as part of the Department’s Clean Diesel Program.
Connecticut’s Clean Diesel Program initially focused on the installation of emission controls on school buses because of health risks posed to children by diesel exhaust. A variety of funding sources were leveraged to reduce children’s exposure to fine particulate matter in diesel exhaust, which can aggravate asthma, bronchitis and other cardiovascular conditions.
With increased funding available from the federal Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) through EPA’s National Clean Diesel Campaign and the State Grants & Funding Program, DEEP has expanded the scope of their efforts to capitalize on these retrofit, repower, replacement and idle reduction opportunities for construction, fleet and marine applications.
According to Mayor Michael Pavia, “This grant is a great opportunity for Stamford to demonstrate its continued leadership in supporting Clean Energy initiatives. This funding will secure a new refuse collection vehicle for the city, with greater fuel economy and state-of-the-art air pollution controls that have the best interests of our citizens in mind.”
In total, $83,466.75 will be awarded to Stamford from the DEEP. The grant was funded by a Federal Court settlement of litigation related to American Electric Power Service Corporation of Columbus, Ohio and its impact on Connecticut’s Air Quality.
