This weekend, the Fairfield Museum presents walking tours of historic Southport Village, originally called, ‘Mill River.’ Participants will gain insights into a part of our area where some of the finest architecture and street-scape design of early America continues to resist intrusion. The tours encompass the village, the harbor and the shipyard that began around 1763. Stopping points include William Bulkley House (circa 1760, Southport’s only surviving pre-Revolutionary homestead on the harbor), merchant homes, and remnants of waterfront onion warehouses from the port’s commercial heyday. Tours will be offered on Sunday, June 22 and October 5 at 1pm and 3pm, and are delivered by Jan Perry, long-time Southport resident. All tours are about one hour in length and begin at Pequot Library, 720 Pequot Avenue in Southport. Tours cost $5 for museum members, $7 for non-members. Please call 259-1598 to reserve your place. The Fairfield Museum is offering a series of walking tours of the Old Post Road Historic District on Saturdays, July 12, August 9 and September 13. Participants will learn about the colonial history of Fairfield while following the route of Old King’s Highway, the route taken by George Washington, Ben Franklin and the British when they marched on Fairfield. Tours will visit the place where the town started in 1639, the site of the county jail, Sherman Parsonage and Edward’s Pond where ‘witches’ were once ‘ducked.’ The Old Burying Ground is a favorite stop on the tour, where some of our town’s founders are buried. The tours begin at 2pm at the Fairfield Museum and History Center, located at 370 Beach Road, and are delivered by Bill Stansfield, a long-time Fairfield resident and former teacher. The cost is $5 for museum members, $7 for non-members. Make your reservation by calling the museum, 259-1598. Harbor Cruises are a fun way to learn regional history. The Fairfield Museum and History Center is offering a series of guided cruises of historic Black Rock Harbor, beginning July 19. Participants will learn about this deep, protected harbor that developed as a trade port and shipbuilding center in the 1700s while cruising aboard the ‘Chief,” a 40’ Navy launch. Tours will provide views of the beautifully restored Black Rock Lighthouse on Fayerweather Island, which at one time was used mainly for the pasturing of sheep. See Penfield Lighthouse, which is said to be haunted by the ghost of a former keeper and enjoy scenic views of the local yacht club, the harbor and more. All tours are delivered by Bruce Williams of Captain’s Cove Seaport, and begin on the dock of Captain’s Cove Seaport, located at One Bostwick Avenue in Bridgeport. Cruises will be offered on July 19 at 5:30pm, August 17 at 12pm and September 27 at 12pm. The cost is $15 for museum members, $20 for non-members. Space is limited, please call 259-1598 to make a reservation. © Copyright by StamfordPlus.com.
