Norwalk, CT - The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum is launching its fourth annual writing competition for students attending Fairfield County schools. The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum/Ernest Hemingway/Young Writers’ Competition will take place between May 1 and June 9, 2017.
LMMM Education Committee Chair Haroldo Williams said, “Our annual Young Writers’ competition provides students with an opportunity to be engaged in learning more about our local and regional history, and about a National Historic Landmark where students can explore American history. As an exciting development to this successful program, this year we are opening the competition to students from public, charter, and private schools throughout Fairfield County. It will be great to see how young students express their thoughts and creativity.”

This is a voluntary writing competition for third and eighth graders. Students will be asked to explore the financial world of LeGrand Lockwood and what life was like in 19th century America. While learning about 19th century finance, such as how the value of money changed over time and what people earned in a day during the Victorian Era, students will also be given the challenge of writing about what they would do with $10,000,00 and describe their make-believe experiences as the heir or heiress to the Lockwood family fortune.
The stories will be picked up from contestants and their teachers on June 9th and competition winners will be notified by mid-September. Competition winners and their families will be Guests of Honor at the Awards Presentation on Nov. 19, 2017, 2-4 p.m. Requirements for the competition will be tailored to third and eighth graders and posted on the museum website and on flyers distributed.
