The Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball announced the acquisition of right-handed relief pitcher Matt Pike. Pike comes to Bridgeport from Atlantic City of the Canadian-American League for future considerations.
Pike, 29, is a former non-drafted free agent signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 2000. The right-handed pitcher reached the independent circuit in 2002 when he signed with Elmira of the Northeast League. He posted a career-best 2.01 ERA in 40.1 innings while striking out 39 hitters and posting a 7-1 record. With the Surf last season Pike recorded 24 saves and struck out 44 in 50.1 innings with a 3.04 ERA.
In 168 minor league games Pike has a career 3.66 minor league ERA. He struck out 282 batters in 297.2 innings while only walking 104. Pike never posted higher than a 3.50 ERA in any of his five seasons of independent baseball. He already made one appearance with Bridgeport since the acquisition, picking up the win in a 7-2 game over the York Revolution. Pike pitched two innings of relief with two strikeouts while allowing no hits and one walk.
