“A rally in Hartford would be a slam dunk for the thousands of Celtics fans from Connecticut and a chance for area residents to show their admiration for the team and honor them for their championship season,” Governor Rell said. “The team has strong Connecticut ties and their appearance here would give us a chance to tell them how proud we are of their accomplishments.” On July 31, 2007, Governor Rell proclaimed “Ray Allen Day” in the State of Connecticut to honor the former University of Connecticut basketball standout and current Celtics superstar when Allen received the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce’s Role Model Award. After the Boston Red Sox won the World Series in 2007, Governor Rell made a similar request of Red Sox Owner John Henry. The Red Sox responded by holding public events in New Haven, Waterbury and Hartford. Thousands of state residents were able to view and take pictures of the World Series trophy, which was put on display in the State Capitol on January 11, 2008. If the Celtics agree to bring the trophy to Connecticut, Governor Rell said she would be honored to issue an official proclamation in the team’s honor. © Copyright by StamfordPlus.com.
