Sports Night, which also features the Hall of Fame ceremonies inducting six prominent county sports legends, is a fund raising event for the Commission in its efforts to create and support educational programs promoting fitness awareness and personal development through sports for the county’s residents. In each of the 15 communities, a committee headed by a local town representative of the Commission, selected a Sports Person of the Year. Each winner was deemed to have had the most positive impact in their sports community from Aug. 2007-Aug. 2008. The Sports Persons of the Year are: Bridgeport – Monica Fitzgerald, state champion bowler Darien – Laurie LaRusso, Darien High girls & boys’ volleyball coach Easton – Luke Kazmierczak, youth soccer standout Fairfield – Fairfield Warde High girls state champion soccer team Greenwich – Angela Tammaro, Greenwich Academy girls’ lacrosse/field hockey coach, athletic director Monroe – the late Ron Wallisa, longtime Director Parks & Recreation New Canaan – New Canaan Baseball Association Norwalk – Dan Walsh, U.S. Olympic bronze medal winning rower Shelton – the late Ed Marrocco, Shelton High baseball/sports supporter Stamford – Todd Paul, professional tennis player Stratford – Paul Dudzinski, Stratford High boys’ basketball coach, state champions Trumbull – Jamie D’Antona, Major League Baseball player Weston – Matt Medve, Weston High boys & girls track teams coach Westport – Marce Petroccio, Staples High football coach Wilton – Ken Dartley, founder Kick for Nick soccer ball donation program Also to be honored at Sports Night is the newest class of the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame. Inductees in the Jackie Robinson Professional Wing are: Chris Drury (Fairfield) and Tim Teufel (Greenwich). In the James O’Rourke Amateur Wing: Gary Liberatore (New Canaan) and Lou Saccone (Bridgeport). Elected to the J. Walter Kennedy Community Service Wing are Ralph King (Norwalk) and Tom Penders (Stratford). The Fairfield County Sports Commission is a 501c3 non-profit organization that is the one-stop resource for the sports community in the area, with a mission of promoting fitness and personal development through sports.
