Freedom wins All-Star Game over Liberty 8-6

The Freedom Division, led by Newark Bears shortstop Ramon Castro’s two home runs, defeated the Liberty Division 8-6 before an Atlantic League All-Star Game and Commerce Bank Ballpark record 8,290 fans on Wednesday night. Castro was named the MVP of the All-Star Game for his 2 for 4 performance with two runs scored, two home runs, and four RBI.

The Freedom Division took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Center fielder Michael Woods (Lancaster Barnstormers) singled and scored on a two-run home run by Castro.

The Freedom Division added two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Third baseman Brandon Larson (Somerset Patriots) reached on a passed ball after a strikeout. First baseman Josh Pressley (Somerset Patriots) then singled and right fielder Jose Herrera (Newark Bears) drove in Larson with an RBI single. Second baseman Danny Gonzalez (Lancaster Barnstormers) followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Freedom Division a 4-0 lead.

The Liberty Division tied up the game with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Third baseman Pat Osborn (Southern Maryland Blue Crabs) and first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke (Bridgeport Bluefish) each singled and right fielder Ron Davenport (Camden Riversharks) followed with an RBI single to plate Osborn. Left fielder Branden Florence (Bridgeport Bluefish) and designated hitter L.J. Biernbaum (Camden Riversharks) then hit RBI singles and catcher Jamie Pogue (Long Island Ducks) drove in one with an RBI groundout to knot up the game at 4-4.

The Freedom Division regained the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Woods walked and scored on Castro’s second home run of the game. Larson then singled and scored on an RBI double by Pressley. Pressley came home to score on an RBI single by Herrera for an 8-4 advantage.

The Liberty Division cut the lead to 8-6 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Center fielder Nic Jackson (Camden Riversharks) singled and Hoorelbeke reached on a fielder’s choice. The runners would score on RBI singles by Davenport and Florence.

Eric Ackerman (Lancaster Barnstormers) picked up the win, allowing four earned runs on five hits in an inning pitched. Ryan Bicondoa (Southern Maryland Blue Crabs) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits in an inning pitched. Nick McCurdy (York Revolution) earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning pitched.
