An evening at Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration, coupled with the unique opportunity to meet UCONN Men’s Basketball Coach Jim Calhoun, make for a winning event on May 7.

From 6 to 7 p.m., enjoy cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres during an intimate reception with Coach Calhoun on the main exhibit floor. At 7 p.m., Coach Calhoun will speak about his work and commitment to the aquarium – a division of Sea Research Foundation, Inc. – as a new trustee. Five lucky individuals will win a basketball signed by Coach Calhoun during a drawing.

As head coach of the University of Connecticut’s basketball team for the past 22 years, Calhoun has transformed UCONN into one of the nation’s elite programs, leading the team to NCAA championships and an NIT championship. He is also heavily involved in regional and national charitable and education efforts around health issues. He and his wife Pat established the Calhoun Cardiology Research Fund at the UCONN Health Center in 1998 and launched the Jim Calhoun Celebrity Classic Golf Tournament in 1999, raising more than $2.75 million in support of the Jim and Pat Calhoun Cardiology Research Endowment Fund.

Calhoun has been actively involved in raising public awareness and funding for Autism Speaks, the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UCONN Connecticut Health Center, Coaches vs. Cancer, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and the Swim Across the Sound Prostate Cancer Institute. He has also served as honorary chairperson/director for several programs, including the Ronald McDonald House Kids Classic Golf Tournament, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and Children’s Miracle Network and the Ray of Hope Foundation Golf Tournament.
