Stamford, CT - The Smashers, the Shippan Racquet Club’s 4.5 USTA women’s team, earned a bid to the USTA National Championships in Tuscan, Arizona. The team went 3-0 in the round robin format to win the USTA New England Sectional Championships on August 12th.
The Smashers went undefeated at the USTA Connecticut Championships with a record of 3-0, playing teams from Vermont and Guilford.
The Smashers won their last match at the USTA New England Championships in dramatic fashion. The Smashers were tied in total games going into final match and won by three games to earn the bid to the Nationals. “The last match was key for us,” said Sue Martin, captain of the Smashers. “Our team played our best when we needed to and we earned our biggest win of the post season.”
Barb Cavaliere, Manager of Shippan Racquet Club, supports all of the club’s USTA teams. “Congratulations to the Smashers on their victories,” said Cavaliere. “We love to see our ladies do well and we wish them the best at the USTA National Championships.”
