Bridgeport, CT - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Stratford Brakettes in a Battle of the Sexes exhibition softball game played under fast-pitch rules on Sunday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
Stratford scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Cassie Rucz, which scored Mandie Fishback. The Bluefish then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, which scored Ramon Castro, who had tripled. Bridgeport’s Joe Bateman scored in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth inning after Castro collected a hit to rightfield with two outs.
Bridgeport starting pitcher Nick French had to settle for a no decision going five innings allowing one run, three hits and one walk with ten strikeouts. Brakettes starting pitcher Brandice Balschmiter also settled for a no decision going five innings allowing three hits, no runs and one walk with seven strikeouts. Bluefish reliever Alyson Chiaramonte went four innings and picked up the win giving up five hits, no runs with two strikeouts. Stratford reliever Alyson Fornier took the loss going three and two-thirds giving up one run, two hits and zero walks with nine strikeouts.
For the Bluefish, Castro went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
Bridgeport will continue their Atlantic League season when they travel to Long Island tomorrow morning to start a three game series with the Ducks. The Bluefish will return to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday June 27 as they start a four-game series with Long Island when they have a day-night separate admission doubleheader with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 1:00 p.m., while game two will start at 6:00 p.m.
