Five Bears collected multiple hits, led by Keith Reed who went 3-4 with two singles, one double, was hit by a pitch, scored twice, and collected one RBI. Raul Gonzalez was 3-4 with three singles, and Will Otanez recorded two doubles. Jose Herrera, who smacked his tenth home run of the season in the sixth inning, scored three times during the game and gathered two RBI. Bobby Hill jump-started the Bears offense, leading off the bottom of the first with a solo home run – his third of the season. After scoring again in the first, the biggest offensive strike came in the second, with a two-out grand slam home run by Ruben Mateo to make the score 6-0. Mike Bumstead (12-6) was the beneficiary of the Bears’ offensive onslaught, earning his league-leading 12th win of the season. He gave up five hits and only one earned run, walked four, and struck out six through six innings of work. The Bluefish got on board with an RBI single by Jay Caligiuri in the top of the fourth, and then, while trailing 9-1, strung together four runs in the top of the fifth to cut the Bears’ lead to 9-5. The inning included a two-RBI single by Caligiuri, who finished the game 2-4 with two singles and three RBI. Bluefish starter Ryan DiPietro (3-4) suffered the loss, giving up ten hits and nine runs – five earned – during 3.1 innings. By pitching the final three innings of the game, Bears reliever Ed Almonte picked up his third save of the season. The Bears finish their series against the Bluefish tomorrow with an 11:05 am game.
