The Bears attempted a ninth inning rally, but fell one run short as the Newark Bears fell to the Bridgeport Bluefish 7-6 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Monday night.

Will Otanez led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and then, with two outs, Bobby Hill walked and Ramon Castro singled to bring home Otanez, but the rally ended with the next batter, Keith Reed, who grounded out to end the game.

The Bluefish never trailed during the game, with RBI doubles by Alex Prieto and Branden Florence in the second inning giving the team an early 4-0 lead. Florence finished the game 5-5 with four singles and a double. The Bluefish scored again in the third on a Wilson Batista sacrifice fly, making the score 5-0.

Bluefish starter Barry Hertzler carried a perfect game into the fourth inning, until Ramon Castro singled with one out. Castro then scored on a double by Keith Reed, who subsequently scored on a Jose Herrera single, cutting the Bluefish lead to 5-2.

The Bluefish responded in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run by Prieto to give the team a 7-2 advantage.

The Bears score another two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-4. Scott Knazek and Bobby Hill both got on base to start the inning. Knazek then scored on a sacrifice fly by Herrera and Ruben Mateo plated Hill with an RBI single. Another Mateo single in the eighth scored Castro, cutting the ‘Fish lead to two runs.

Hertzler (7-7) earned the win, lasting seven innings and giving up four runs on seven hits. Eddy Ramos picked up his eleventh save of the season. Bears starter Pat Stanley (9-6) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on ten hits through 4.1 innings of work. Relievers Shaun Babula and Andy Shibilo teamed up to pitch 4.2 scoreless innings, with Babula pitched out of two bases loaded jams.

The Bears continue their home series against the Bluefish tomorrow morning with an 11:05 game, featuring Jose Garcia (6-3) on the mound. The Newark Bears play their home games at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, conveniently located off Route 280, across the street from the Newark Broad St. train station, and minutes from Route 78 and the New Jersey Turnpike.
