The Newark Bears scored four runs in the eighth inning, but their rally ultimately fell short and they lost to the Bridgeport Bluefish on Thursday afternoon, splitting the four-game series 10-6 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Trailing 8-2 going into the bottom of the eighth, Ruben Mateo smacked a two-RBI single, plating Bobby Hill and Vic Gutierrez. Then with two outs, Randall Simon picked up his only hit of the game: a two-RBI double to put the Bears within two runs of the Bluefish. However, the Bluefish scored two more runs in the top of the ninth to put the game away.

Both Mateo and Raul Gonzalez went 2-4 with a double and single in the game. Mateo also scored once and collected two RBI while Gonzalez earned one RBI. In the sixth inning, Ramon Nivar deposited his first home run of the season; a solo shot that just cleared the wall down the left field line.

The Bluefish recorded a big inning of their own earlier in the game, scoring five runs in the fifth to initially pull away from the Bears. Going into the fifth inning with a 2-1 lead, the Bluefish loaded the bases with no outs. Ryan Bear then hit an RBI single, followed by a two-RBI ground ruled double by Branden Florence, and a Wilson Batista two-RBI single to break the game open with a 7-2 advantage. Florence finished the game with 3 RBI and Jesse Hoorelbeke went 3-6 with three singles.

Mike Connolly (2-1) pitched a solid seven innings, allowing two runs on six hit and striking out four batters to pick up the win. Recently signed Matt Smith (0-1) suffered the loss for the Bears, giving up seven runs on seven hits through five innings.

The Bears next head to Lancaster, where Pat Stanley (9-6) will take on the Barnstormers’ Ben Fritz (0-0) in game one of the weekend series. The Bears play their home games at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, conveniently located off Route 280, across the street from the Newark-Broad St. train station, and minutes from Route 78 and the New Jersey Turnpike.
