In a similar story as the night before, the York Revolution’s comeback efforts fell a run short, losing to the Bridgeport Bluefish 6-5 in front of 4,989 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Saturday night. Now saddled with a three-game losing streak following a three-game winning streak, the Revs slip into a tie for second place with Lancaster, one game behind Somerset for first. The homestand wraps up on Sunday at 5 p.m., as the Revs look to avoid the sweep.
York County native Shawn Hedrick (0-1) suffered the loss in his first start, charged with six runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings.
Bridgeport built a 6-1 lead before the comeback took place. Colin Roberson’s second inning sac fly handed the visitors an early lead, before they scored two more in each of the following two innings.
A bases-loaded walk to Josh Phelps and a Luis Lopez sac fly accounted for the two runs in the third, and in the fourth, it was an RBI double by Adam Greenberg, and a run-scoring single from Tike Redman.
The Bluefish scored their final run in the fifth, when Phelps raced home on a foul pop up at first base off the bat of Hiram Bocachica, scoring on what turned out to be their third sacrifice fly of the night.
The Revs’ bullpen combined for 4.2 scoreless innings giving the offense a chance to comeback.
The Revs pulled within 5-1 in the fourth inning on a broken-bat single to left by Ian Bladergroen, but left the bases loaded against Bridgeport starter Esteban Yan (1-0).
Down 6-1 an inning later, the Revs got to Yan in the form of a three-run rally, on four consecutive hits. Ramon Castro began the rally with a single to left, before Jose Herrera doubled to right. Steve Haake drove in a run on a single up the middle, Bladergroen knocked home another run with a ground-rule double to left-center, and Erold Andrus brought York within 6-4 on a groundout to first. The Revs were left wanting, however, as a sharp ground ball from John Pachot was turned into an out on a diving stop by Bocachica at second base, saving a run.
It was not the only missed opportunity of the night for the Revs, who stranded 10 runners, seven in scoring position. They even had a chance to score the game’s first runs, but Haake’s first-inning line drive to first base was caught, stranding men at second and third.
Still, the Revs fought closer, plating a run off reliever Luis Arroyo in the seventh. Castro led off with a ground-rule double to right-center, and Herrera singled up the middle. Pinch-hitter James Shanks then roped an RBI single off the left field wall, pulling York within 6-5 before an out was made. But Arroyo retired the next two, and Kevin Mannix came on to retire Pachot on a groundout, ending the threat.
Antonio Alfonseca pitched a clean eighth, and Jorge Julio improved to 22-for-22 in save opportunities, striking out the side, and allowing only a single to Herrera in the ninth.
