Bridgeport, CT - The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball on Wednesday announced that Bridgeport Bluefish outfielder Welington Dotel has been named the 2015 Atlantic League Player of the Year. Dotel was unanimously chosen for this award by a panel of voters.

“We are very pleased to hear that Welington has been named the 2015 Atlantic League Player of the Year,” said Bluefish general manager Jamie Toole. “It was a pleasure to watch him take the field every day, as he plays the game with such passion and energy. He was a strong contributor to our club all season long and we are happy that he has received this great honor.”

Dotel led the Atlantic League in hits (180), triples (13), extra base hits (52), total bases (261), stolen bases (45), and slugging percentage (.492), ranked second in batting average (.340), third in doubles (31), and fifth in games played (133) and on-base percentage (.371). He also collected eight home runs, 68 RBI, and 68 runs scored. Welington now holds Bluefish single season records in hits and triples, and a career mark in batting average (minimum 500 at-bats). The slugger was previously named to the 2015 Atlantic League All-Star Team earlier this year and won the All-Star Game Home Run Derby.

“Welington plays the game the way it is supposed to be played,” said Bluefish manager Ricky VanAsselberg. “He plays every play like it could be his last.”

The 30-year-old has spent five seasons in the independent ranks from 2010-13 and 2015, appearing in 351 games and collecting a .342 batting average with 237 runs scored, 204 RBI, 139 extra-base hits, and 128 stolen bases. Prior to this season, his most impressive campaign came in 2012 with El Paso of the American Association, where he amassed a remarkable .405 batting average in 247 at-bats, with 46 runs scored, 44 RBI and 23 stolen bases over the course of 58 games played.

Dotel began his career in 2006 as an undrafted free agent with the Seattle Mariners organization, where he spent five seasons reaching as high as the Single-A level. Over the course of 627 minor league games, he owns a .317 batting average with 395 runs scored, 337 RBI, 130 doubles, 46 triples, 53 home runs and 179 stolen bases.
