Stamford, CT - Stamford Public Schools (SPS) and the SPS Teacher of the Year and Spotlight Award Program committee announce a collaboration with The Stamford Public Education Foundation (SPEF) to celebrate public education in our community and the individuals who give so much to make it work.
Each year, SPEF hosts a communitywide celebration to present its Excellence in Education Awards bringing together community members, corporations, school administrators, teachers, parents and other nonprofit agencies to celebrate the power of public education for students and families in Stamford. This year, SPS will join with SPEF by presenting the SPS Teacher of the Year and Spotlight Awards as part of the SPEF event, scheduled for March 21, 2019, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the Stamford Sheraton Hotel.
“We are excited to partner with SPEF in this celebration of individuals, organizations and, even more importantly, community,” said Camille Spaulding, SPS 2018 Teacher of the Year, Connecticut Teacher of the Year Cohort and co-chair of the SPS Teacher of the Year and Spotlight Award Program committee. “A community built on the professionalism of its educators, the dedication of its volunteers and the generosity of Stamford’s most successful businesses and individuals.”
According to the SPS Teacher of the Year and Spotlight Award Program committee, the SPS Stamford Teacher of the Year award epitomizes the best qualities of all SPS teachers. The committee of peers, which is co-chaired by Spaulding and AITE Teacher Vin Urbanowski, 2017 SPS Teacher of the Year and Connecticut Cohort, and directed by SHS Teacher Deborah Chaikind, reviews all nominations in a rigorous process that includes monographs, interviews and classroom observation. The SPS Teacher of the Year winner automatically becomes a candidate for the State of Connecticut Teacher of the Year program. The SPS Spotlight Awards are presented to educators or teams of educators for exceptional innovation, achievement or community involvement. SPS will announce the Spotlight honorees and the Teacher of the Year Semi-finalists and Finalists the week of February 25, 2019. The committee will make its final selections in early March.
The SPEF Excellence in Education Awards include the SPEF Leadership Award for community building, the SPEF Philanthropy Award to recognize exceptionally committed community investment and the SPEF Educator Award reflecting the community’s esteem.
The evening kicks off with a networking reception featuring live music, a silent auction, raffle, food and beverages. The awards presentation follows in the ballroom.
