Stamford, CT - Superintendent Stamford Public School (SPS) Earl Kim and the Stamford Board of Education (BOE) named Dr. Tamu Lucero, Assistant Superintendent—Elementary, as the SPS Deputy Superintendent, and Stratford BOE Chief Operations Officer (COO), Clarence Zachery, as SPS Chief Fiscal and Operations Support Officer (CFOSO), at the January 23, 2018, regular BOE meeting. Additionally, as part of the Central Office reorganization, Dr. Michael Fernandes, Assistant Superintendent—Secondary, has been appointed to the position of Associate Superintendent for Intervention and Student Support Services. All positions will be effective July 1, 2018.
“I am confident that the individuals selected for these critical roles have the skills and experience necessary to be integral to the success of our Central Office reorganization,” said Kim. “Once complete, the reorganization will result in increased support for staff and schools with improved student learning in all dimensions of mind, body and heart.”
Lucero has served in her current role where she supports and supervises all elementary programs and administrators since June 2013. Among the successful initiatives under her leadership, were the launch of a new K-8 magnet school and implementation of the Department of Justice districtwide English Learner (EL) mandates. In her new role, Lucero will be responsible for overseeing the implementation and evaluation of the district’s strategic plan, integrating research-based best practices into curriculum and instruction, and coaching and mentoring principals.
Prior to coming to Stamford, Lucero held several administrative and teaching positions in public school districts in Ohio. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Wright State University, a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from The Ohio State University and a Doctor of Education in Educational Administration from Ohio University.
Zachery has held the position of COO in the Stratford Public Schools since 2013, leading the non-academic operations and management of a school district comprising $108 million budget, 13-schools and 7,500 students. In his role here, Zachery will lead and manage all aspects of operations support including finance, facilities management, technology, food service, transportation and security.
Prior to working for the Stratford BOE, Zachery worked for Derby BOE, Yale University, BMGC Holdings and JPMorgan Chase. Zachery holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Yale University and a Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University.
Fernandes has served in his current role of supporting and supervising all secondary programs and administrators, including oversight of Special Education, since May 2013. As Associate Superintendent for Intervention and Student Support Services, in addition to coaching and mentoring principals, Fernandes will also have responsibility for ensuring all students including struggling learners, English Learners and Special Education students have access to quality instruction and supports.
Prior to his current position, Fernandes was principal at Turn of River Middle school for six years. Fernandes holds a Doctorate of Education Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Bridgeport, as well as a Master of Science Degree in School Psychology from Miami University, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Sociology from Southern Connecticut State University.
In the coming weeks, the remaining executive level positions of Executive Director for Human Resources, Associate Superintendent for School Development, and Associate Superintendent for Teaching & Learning will be posted or filled along with a number of directorships in the Central Office.
