Stamford Public Schools fills three key openings

Stamford, CT - Superintendent Stamford Public Schools Dr. Winnie Hamilton and the Stamford Board of Education announce the hiring of Susan Austin as Associate Superintendent and Tamu Lucero as Assistant Superintendent Elementary, as well as the appointment of Michael Meyer as Executive Director, Support Services and Special Programs, for 2013-14 school year.

Austin is a career educational professional serving in K-12, as well as post-secondary roles. Currently Austin is Principal at Stepney Elementary School, in Monroe, a position she has held since 2002. Prior to that Austin held several positions in the New Canaan Public Schools District, including Assistant Principal, K-12 Mathematics Coordinator, and Teacher. Additionally, for the past three years, she has been an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Education at Sacred Heart University.

In her position, Austin will report directly to Hamilton and will play a major role in directing the district’s education reform, including the implementation of the Common Core State Standards.

Austin holds a Master of Arts in Education, from Southern Connecticut State University and has also completed advanced graduate work there. Austin is the co-author of several books on Mathematics and has presented at a number of national math conferences.

Lucero has broad experience in education. She currently serves as Elementary Principal at Worthington Hills Elementary school outside of Columbus, Ohio, a position she has held since 2005. Prior to this position, Lucero was an Elementary Principal for five years in the Columbus Public Schools District. She was also a teacher in the same district and served as a Visiting Lecturer in Namibia Africa. Additionally, for the past four years, Lucero has been an adjunct professor at Ohio Dominican University.

In her role, Lucero will report to the Associate Superintendent and will be responsible for the support and supervision of the district’s 12 elementary schools.

Lucero holds a Doctoral degree in Education Administration from Ohio State University. She also sits on the Professional Advisory Board for the National Center for Learning Disabilities.

Meyer has worked in the Stamford Public Schools district for the past 25 years, most recently as Director Student Support Services since 2006. Prior to 2006, Meyer was a Special Education Facilitator, Special Education Teacher, and Social Worker Assistant.

In his new role, Meyer will be responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Alternative Programs, including ARTS and home instruction, as well as special education services and English Language Learner programs.

Meyer holds a Master of Human Resources Development from the University of Bridgeport and a Master of Science in Special Education, as well as a Sixth Year Degree from Fairfield University.
