Arthritis of the Elbow, Wrist, Hip and Knee to be presented at Norwalk Hospital

The next topic in the Norwalk Hospital Medicine 2010 series is "Arthritis of the Elbow, Wrist, Hip and Knee". This program will be held on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Richard S. Perkin Auditorium of the hospital. The speakers are Michael Marks, MD, MBA, of Weston, orthopaedic surgeon, and Michael G. Soojian, MD, of Wilton, orthopaedic surgeon, both in practice with Coastal Orthopaedics in Norwalk, Westport and Darien.

Dr Soojian will discuss arthritis of the elbow and wrist, focusing on symptoms, diagnosis and treatments. Dr. Marks will address arthritis of the hip and knee, also discussing the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment options. The speakers will conclude the program by answering questions from the audience.

About the Speakers

Dr. Michael Marks is internationally recognized for his leadership in orthopaedic surgery. His area of expertise focuses on spinal diseases, hip replacements, total knee replacements and sports injuries.

Named to "Connecticut's Top Docs Surgeons," Dr. Marks was also selected to be a member of Strathmore's Who's Who in the Healthcare Industry. This reference directory includes the highest achievers from throughout the country and across the world and recognizes them for achieving notable success in their respective fields. In addition, Dr. Marks has been named to "America's Top Physicians" by Consumers' Research Council of America, a Washington, D.C., based research organization whose purpose is "to educate and assist consumers in obtaining the finest professional services."

Dr. Marks is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a Past-President of the Connecticut Orthopaedic Society. He completed his orthopaedic residency at George Washington University and completed a Spine Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in 1988. He received his MBA from the University of Tennessee in 2001. He has lectured locally and nationally and has appeared frequently on television and radio discussing hip replacement, knee replacement, kyphoplasty, osteoporosis, cervical and lumbar diseases, and other orthopaedic issues.

Dr. Marks is credited with bringing innovative orthopaedic treatments, including Pedicle Screws and Kyphoplasty (a minimally invasive surgical procedure used in treating vertebral fractures caused by osteoporosis), to the Greater Norwalk area. For his pioneering efforts, he has been a two-time winner of the Frank J. Scanlon Award for Surgical Innovation.

Michael G. Soojian, MD is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in techniques in hand and upper extremity surgery.

Dr. Soojian earned his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC and remained there for medical school where he graduated cum laude. He completed his residency training in orthopaedics and his fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery from New York University-Hospital for Joint Diseases. Dr. Soojian specializes in the treatment of all conditions of the hand and upper extremity, but has a particular interest in the surgical treatment of nerve compression syndromes, arthroscopy of the wrist, and arthroplasty of the wrist, shoulder, and elbow.

The author of several articles published in scientific journals, he has also conducted research that has been accepted for presentation at national meetings including the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.
