NORWALK, CT - Three Norwalk Hospital Volunteers who assist patients in the Smilow Family Breast Health Center recently received the Quarterly President’s Award for outstanding volunteer service.
Dan DeBarba, president and CEO of Norwalk Hospital thanked Volunteers Betsy Brown of Norwalk, Cecilia Misa of Westport and Kathy Richards of New Canaan for their dedication to the Smilow Family Breast Health Center. He presented them with plaques in honor of their outstanding service during a luncheon at the hospital held in their honor. Breast Health Specialist, Mary Heery, APRN, AOCNS, said that the three Volunteers impact patients in a very positive way and “they played a major role in the recent accreditation of the Center, which is a tremendous achievement for all of us.”
The Smilow Family Breast Health Center at Norwalk Hospital was granted a three-year full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) for providing the highest quality evaluation and management of patients with breast diseases.
The national accreditation, administered by the American College of Surgeons, is only given to centers that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous on-site evaluation of their performance. The accreditation required demonstrated compliance with 27 standards established by the NAPBC in numerous areas, including center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.
“Our team of physicians, nurses, breast specialists, staff and our wonderful volunteers at the Smilow Family Breast Health Center are dedicated to providing patients with comprehensive care and a multidisciplinary treatment approach,” Heery affirmed. The Volunteers offer comfort and support to patients and assist the staff at the Center. We love our Volunteers, said Zarek Mena, program coordinator at the Smilow Family Breast Health Center, who emphasized the critical role the volunteers played as the Center went through the recent accreditation process. We have a great team, she added, and much to celebrate.
