HARTFORD, CT - Department of Consumer Protection food safety inspectors are working with retailers in the state to remove ground turkey products from store shelves and is urging consumers to make sure that all ground turkey products should be handled carefully and cooked thoroughly, following the warning from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food Safety Inspection Service. These products have been associated with a nationwide salmonelosis outbreak, and may be contaminated with the Salmonella Heidleburg strain. Salmonella infections can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.

“We are preliminarily aware that implicated products were carried by Price Chopper, Big Y, and Shop-Rite supermarkets in Connecticut, but we are reaching out to all retailers to check their inventory and remove these potentially hazardous items,” Consumer Protection Commissioner William Rubenstein said today. “Consumers who have any of the products, listed below, at home, need to throw them out or bring them back to the store for a refund. This recall serves as a reminder that ground turkey should always be thoroughly cooked before consumption.”

Cargill, the producer of the product, has announced an immediate recall of fresh and frozen ground turkey meat produced at its Springdale, Arkansas production facility from February 20, 2011 through August 2nd.

The turkey meat, which may be contaminated with Salmonella Heidelberg, is being recalled as a result of Cargill’s “...internal investigation, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) information that became available on Aug. 1, 2011, as well as an ongoing USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) investigation into multiple illnesses from Salmonella Heidelberg.“

The products involved are ground turkey. All packages include Est. P-963 in the USDA shield on the label. Products implicated are listed below, please note that not all of these products are sold in Connecticut:
