Stamford, CT - “The Biology and Biography of Cancer” will be offered in Stamford as a 10-week course beginning in January at the Episcopal Church of Christ the Healer in Stamford. Currently taught at the City University of New York, the course covers technical information about the disease, along with an exploration of the social and psychological aspects of cancer and its treatment.

The course uses two texts, Molecular Biology of Cancer: Mechanisms, Targets, and Therapeutics, by Dr. Lauren Pecorino, and The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, by Dr. Shiddhartha Mukherjee. Course instructors are Stamford residents Dr. Edward Tucker and Paula Hanson. Dr. Tucker, a biology professor, has taught the course as part of a team to undergraduate students who are non-biology majors at The City University of New York (CUNY). Ms. Hanson, who has had experience with cancer over the past 10 years, is a writer and editor.

Journalist Carl Rollyson, who teaches the CUNY course with Dr. Tucker, noted, “(in the course) we came to an understanding of how science and medicine are just beginning to comprehend how cancer develops. We are a long way from winning the war on cancer – indeed, calling it a war, as we have come to realize, is a mistaken metaphor. It is not a matter of winning or losing, but of doing the hard but very rewarding work of understanding how a disease that manifests itself in so many different guises can be managed and, in certain cases, cured.”

The course will meet on Saturdays from 1pm to 3pm beginning on January 19 at the Episcopal Church of Christ the Healer. The church is located at 20 Brookdale Road in Stamford, on the corner of High Ridge and Brookdale Roads, 1.5 miles north of Exit 35 on the Merritt Parkway.

Cost of the course is $200, which covers all materials, including the two textbooks. Enrollment is limited to 20 students. Limited scholarship assistance is available.

More information and application forms can be obtained through www.christthehealerstamford.org, or by calling the church office at 203.322.6991.
