Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) announced today that 48 employers and unions in Connecticut have been selected for the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program, which was created by the health care reform legislation signed into law earlier this year. The Early Retiree Reinsurance Program provides $5 billion to small businesses and other employers to reduce health care costs for their retirees who are not yet eligible for Medicare by reimbursing their medical claims.

“The skyrocketing cost of health care and the inability of early retirees to find health insurance options has made it difficult for Americans who retire before they are eligible for Medicare to make ends meet and employers to cover health care cost for employees and retirees,” said Dodd. “The Early Retiree Reinsurance Program will help to alleviate the financial burden for Connecticut early retirees and employers by providing immediate relief from the soaring costs of medical, surgical, hospital, and prescription drug costs. This is just another example of how the landmark health care law is helping to provide secure, quality, and affordable health care to all Americans.”

This program originated in “The Affordable Health Choices Act,” which the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) passed on July 15, 2009. Dodd served as the acting chairman of the HELP Committee during that time and worked closely with Senate leaders on final passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which was signed into law in March.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight will continue to accept and review applications for the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program. Connecticut employers and unions interested in receiving more information about the program can visit www.ERRP.gov or call 877-574-3777.
