“Low Back Pain: Surgical and Non-Surgical Treatments” is the next program in the Norwalk Hospital Medicine 2011 series that will be presented on Tuesday, May 24, at 7:00 p.m. in the Richard S. Perkin Auditorium of the hospital. The featured speakers are Dr. Scott P. Sanderson, neurosurgeon with Neurosurgical Associates of Southwestern Connecticut, and Dr. Robert L. Brady, orthopaedic surgeon with Coastal Orthopaedics.

Back pain is one of the most common complaints that doctors hear from their patients. During this Medicine 2011 lecture, a neurosurgeon and an orthopaedic surgeon -- Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Brady – will explain common causes of back pain and effective treatments that are available non-surgically and through minimally invasive surgical procedures. The program will conclude with a question and answer session.

About the Speakers:

Board certified in Neurological Surgery, Dr. Sanderson holds his B.S degree from Cornell University and an MD degree cum laude from State University of New York at Syracuse.

He completed his training in general surgery and neurological surgery at New York University Medical Center, where he was Chief Resident in Neurological Surgery. He pursued a Fellowship in Spinal Surgery and Instrumentation in the Department of Neurosurgery, New York University Medical Center.

A member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Dr. Sanderson has received honors for his academic and surgical expertise. He is also a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and has received the Lange Medical Publication Award, the McGraw Hill Award for Academic Achievement and an Academic Achievement Award from the Department of Neurological Surgery, SUNY at Syracuse.

Dr. Sanderson has published articles on neurosurgical topics in prestigious medical journals and has lectured nationally on subjects such as “The Unique Characteristics of Upper Lumbar Disc Herniations” and “Management of Raised Intracranial Pressure in the Head Injured Patient.”

Dr. Brady is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, with a minor in Economics, at the State University of New York College at Geneseo and holds his MD degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY.

His fellowship training was completed at one of only fifteen sites where the United States FDA trial for lumbar artificial disc replacement was performed.

Dr. Brady has presented research at national meetings and is published in peer-reviewed journals. He also founded a non-profit organization called the Straight Caribbean Spine Foundation with a mission to provide comprehensive care to children with advanced spinal deformities in third world countries.
