NEW CANAAN, CT - Silver Hill Hospital is pleased to announce that its President and Medical Director Dr. John Santopietro, MD, DFAPA has been awarded the Special Presidential Commendation from the American Psychiatric Association (APA). The award is given in recognition for enduring excellence in soulful community psychiatry leadership.
Dr. Santopietro was presented with the award last month at the APA’s Annual Meeting during the Convocation of Distinguished Fellows held at the Javits Convention Center in New York, NY.
Dr. Santopietro has devoted his medical career to transforming healthcare systems to improve upon the experience of care for those suffering with mental illness and substance use disorders. He has coined the term “Clinical Soul” to represent a multi-faceted approach that personalizes care to conform to the individual through a thorough assessment process and individualized treatment plans centered in evidence-based medicine and driven by a deeply held team mission. This approach occurs in an environment that allows clinicians the creative freedom to treat patients the way they believe will be most effective, provides more time for clinician engagement, and encourages continuous learning in treating both mind and body.
Dr. Santopietro graduated from Yale University, Northwestern University Medical School, and completed his internship, residency and fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He serves on multiple national boards including the American Association of Community Psychiatrists, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, and the American Hospital Association’s Governing Council of the Section for Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Services. He is a member of the Medical Directors Institute of the National Council for Behavior Health and the National Crisis Services Task Force. In 2012, he was president of the Connecticut Psychiatric Society where he earned an award for his psychiatric response leadership during the Sandy Hook tragedy.
