Norwalk, CT, February 4, 2013 – Norwalk Hospital Foundation received a $20,000 competitive grant from the Fairfield County Community Foundation in support of Norwalk Hospital’s Dental Clinic. Each year, the Clinic provides dental care for more than 1,700 people throughout Fairfield County who otherwise might not be able to receive necessary dental care. The Clinic offers a full range of services - oral exams, cleanings, surgical procedures and orthodontics.
Since opening in 1980, the Dental Clinic has been meeting the needs of underserved individuals who reside in communities served by Norwalk Hospital. Over the years, this population has grown dramatically, generating a much greater demand for services. The Clinic has also become the primary provider of dental services for those with developmental, mental and physical disabilities. The grant from the Fairfield County Community Foundation will help ensure three key targets are achieved: that all patients will be 1) compassionately cared for regardless of their ability to pay; 2) informed of preventive home dental care instruction; and 3) monitored after treatment to track infections and post operative pain in order to identify needs for intervention.
“We are so grateful for the support and generosity of the Fairfield County Community Foundation,” shared Mark Feigen, DMD and Director, Norwalk Hospital Dental Clinic.
Oral health is very important to one’s general health and well-being. At the Clinic, we believe that everyone deserves to be pain free and infection free. This grant helps to ensure that all of our patients, especially those with significant health issues, developmental disabilities and mental health issues have access to quality dental care, regardless of their ability to pay.”
“Access to affordable, convenient health services - including dental care - is one of the hallmarks of a thriving community," said Juanita T. James, President & CEO of the Fairfield County Community Foundation. "The services of the Dental Clinic at Norwalk Hospital help ensure all residents can get the care they need and do not defer preventative care which can help avoid complications and costly procedures down the road."
In addition to providing dental care, the Clinic participates in community outreach events and health fairs offering dental screenings and educational programs to the public. The Clinic also participates in teaching collaboratives with Norwalk Community College and The University of Bridgeport Fones School of Dental Hygiene.
