Norwalk Hospital Health Lecture Series presented at Laurel Ridge in Ridgefield

"Eat Well, Live Well: Healthy Summer Eating" will be the first topic in the summer "Healthy Life Live Well" lecture series at the Laurel Ridge Health Care Center in Ridgefield, 642 Danbury Road on Wednesday, July 14th, at 12 noon. The featured speaker is Barbara Schmidt, MS, RD, CDN, of New Canaan, Nutrition Life Style Program Specialist at Norwalk Hospital. Her role at Norwalk Hospital is to help patients to best meet their specialized nutritional needs as part of a holistic approach to health care. From analyzing a patient’s food intake, to developing an individualized nutrition plan, she works with patients to meet their unique goals.

"Preventing Common Sports Injuries and Bone Health" is the topic on Thursday, July 29, at 6 p.m. Michael Marks, MD, MBA, of Weston, orthopaedic surgeon with Coastal Orthopaedics, will be the featured speaker. Dr. Marks is internationally recognized for his leadership in orthopaedic surgery. His areas of expertise, in addition to spinal diseases, include hip replacements, total knee replacements and sports injuries.

Named to “Connecticut’s Top Docs – Surgeons,” Dr. Marks was also selected to be a member of Strathmore's Who's Who in the Healthcare Industry. This reference directory includes the highest achievers from throughout the country and across the world and recognizes them for achieving notable success in their respective fields. In addition, Dr. Marks has been named to "America's Top Physicians" by Consumers' Research Council of America, a Washington, D.C., based research organization whose purpose is "to educate and assist consumers in obtaining the finest professional services."

Dr. Marks is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a Past-President of the Connecticut Orthopaedic Society. He completed his orthopaedic residency at George Washington University and completed a Spine Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in 1988. He received his MBA from the University of Tennessee in 2001. He currently is a Board of Councilor from Connecticut for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is a member of the North American Spine Society, the American Spinal Injury Association, the Fairfield County Medical Association as well as the Connecticut State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He has lectured locally and nationally and has appeared frequently on television discussing hip replacement, knee replacement, kyphoplasty, osteoporosis, cervical and lumbar diseases, and other orthopaedic issues. A Senior Attending Surgeon at Norwalk Hospital, he has been a team physician for the Weston High School Football Team since 1988.

Dr. Marks is credited with previously bringing innovative orthopaedic treatments, including Pedicle Screws and Kyphoplasty (a minimally invasive surgical procedure used in treating vertebral fractures caused by osteoporosis), to the Greater Norwalk area. For his pioneering efforts, he has been a two-time winner of the Frank J. Scanlon Award for Surgical Innovation.

There will be two additional programs in August. On Thursday, August 12th at 6 p.m., Bridget DeBartolomeo, APRN, Oncology Clinician with the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital, will discuss "Cancer Prevention: Early Detection and Latest Treatments.

On Thursday, August 26th at 6 p.m., Jean Thompson from Case Management at Norwalk Hospital will discuss Health Care Planning and Advanced Directives.
